Noesis is a British , stop-motion animated short film directed by Sophie Klevenow from 2009.

action

A child-like being sits on the earth. Its skull is open, but instead of a brain there is a foamy liquid inside. The child reaches into the liquid with his fingers and then blows soap bubbles between his fingers , which he follows with his gaze.

An adult appears, a printed scrap of paper flies out of his mouth, destroying a soap bubble in the child and then fusing it with the child's skin. More adults appear and the flying scraps of newspaper soon cover the child's entire skin, closing the hole in his skull. Instead of soap bubbles, scraps of paper now also appear from the child's mouth. It rises. Its skin has darkened, its appearance has changed - it is now an adult too. With his hand he destroys the last soap bubble floating in the room and walks away.

production

The German graphic designer Sophie Klevenow (* 1979), daughter of the actor Heinz Klevenow , created Noesis until June 2009 as a graduation film as part of her master's degree at the Bristol School of Art, Media and Design at the University of the West of England . The film had its public premiere at London's Canary Wharf Film Festival in September 2009.

It was Klevenow's first stop-motion film. The dolls are made of a paper mache body that has been modeled over an aluminum wire skeleton. The basis for the design of the figures were influences from the theater and puppet shows. Klevenow used a Canon EOS 40D with a manual lens for the recordings . The production costs amounted to around 2500  pounds , some of which was raised through a DAAD scholarship .

The title noesis refers to the philosophical concept of conscious thinking and understanding, noesis . Klevenow called the basic idea of the film "the loss of childlike naivety [...] The title 'Noesis' is a synonym and a rather unknown term for consciousness - the intellectual process of finding knowledge through perception and reflection - while 'Noesis' also means that mental act of object focusing and giving meaning. "

  3. 'Noesis' is mainly about the loss of childlike naivete […] The title 'Noesis' is a synanymic and less common term for cognituin - the mental process of acquiring knowledge by means of perception and reasoning - while 'noesis' additionally describes the mental action of focussing on an object and applying sense to it.
