Norbert Balatsch

Norbert Balatsch (born March 10, 1928 in Vienna ; † May 6, 2020 there ) was an Austrian choir singer with a baritone voice and a choirmaster .

Life

Norbert Balatsch began his musical career with the Vienna Boys' Choir , of which he was a member from 1938 to 1944. From 1952 he was a singer in the choir of the Vienna State Opera and one year later took over the management of the Vienna Men's Singing Association . From 1968 Balatsch was the choir director of the Vienna State Opera until 1983, when he resigned from this position and took over the management of the men's choir and took over the management of the “Coro di Santa Cecilia di Roma” . In addition to leading this choir, he has acted as the conductor of numerous international orchestras. From 1999 to 2001 Balatsch was artistic director of the Vienna Boys' Choir.

From 1972 to 1999 spent Balatsch with his wife during the summer months at the Bayreuth Festival , where he served as choir director with renowned conductors like Horst Stein , Eugen Jochum , Silvio Varviso , Heinrich Hollreiser , Carlos Kleiber , Karl Böhm , Pierre Boulez , Colin Davis , Dennis Russell Davies , Peter Schneider , Daniel Barenboim , James Levine , Georg Solti and Giuseppe Sinopoli worked together. During this time, several audio and video recordings were made, for which Balatsch rehearsed the choir. Most of them were also televised.

Norbert Balatsch lived in Vienna and in Kierling , was married to Herta Balatsch, a former mezzo-soprano of the Vienna State Opera Choir, and had a daughter and a son. He died in Vienna in May 2020 at the age of 92.
