Norbert F. Schneider (born August 23, 1955 in Rehau ) is a German sociologist , director of the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB) and visiting professor at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Mainz .

Education and professional activity

Schneider studied sociology, psychology and pedagogy at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the University of Bamberg , acquired in 1982 the Diploma in Sociology , PhD in 1986 for Dr. rer. pole. and completed his habilitation in 1994.

He worked as a research assistant at the University of Bamberg, was managing director of the research and consulting company Xit in Nuremberg from 1985 to 1987 and then a research assistant at the Institute for Empirical Sociology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

From 1988 to 1995 he worked as an academic advisor at the University of Bamberg and then until 1997 as head of the department and deputy head of the institute at the State Institute for Family Research (ifb) in Bamberg. From 1997 to 2009 he was professor of sociology at the University of Mainz, from 2008 to 2009 member of the board of trustees of the Federal Institute for Population Research and from 2009 visiting professor for sociology at the University of Mainz and, in the meantime, at the University of Vienna .

He has been director of the Federal Institute for Population Research since April 1, 2009 and is still visiting professor at the Institute for Sociology at the University of Mainz.

His main research interests include the sociology of family and mobility , sociology of consumption and the sociology of sexuality .

He works in an advisory capacity on several committees. In particular, he has been a member of the Demography Expert Council at the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) since June 2010 and a member of the Expert Commission for the Eighth Family Report at the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ) since July 2010 .

Publications

The Federal Institute for Population Research names Norbert F. Schneider's selected publications (as of February 2011) six monographs and multigraphs, ten editorships, 29 articles in edited volumes, 11 peer-reviewed articles in specialist journals, 13 further articles in journals, nine materials and documentation and four reviews.
