His non-fiction book "Der Mensch im Tier", published in 2018, became a bestseller.

Life

Sachser studied biology , chemistry and sociology at Bielefeld University . 1980–1982 he received a doctoral scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He received his doctorate in 1984 at the Institute for Behavioral Physiology there under Klaus Immelmann . For nine years he was a research assistant in research and teaching at the Institute for Zoological Physiology at the University of Bayreuth , where he also completed his habilitation in 1992 . In 1993 he accepted a call to the professorship for zoology and behavioral biology at the University of Münster. On the other hand, he turned down the appointment to a professorship for behavioral ecology at the University of Hamburg in 2002.

1994–1999 Sachser was on the board of the German Zoological Society . From 1997 to the present day he is co-editor of the journals Physiology & Behavior and Hormones & Behavior . From 1997–1998 he was Vice President and 1999–2002 Chairman of the Ethological Society. He was a founding member of the Animal Welfare Committee of the German Agricultural Society and initiator of the behavioral biology section of the German Zoological Society. In 2002, Sachser and his team organized the First European Conference on Behavioral Biology in Münster, which from now on takes place every two years in Europe. In 2005 he founded the Otto Creutzfeldt Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience together with colleagues from the medical and psychological departments . From 2007–2010 he wrote a curriculum for evolutionary biology in the Master of Science degree together with Erich Bornberg-Bauer from the Münster Institute for Evolution and Biodiversity and colleagues from the University of Groningen . Sachser has been a member of the Senate and Research Council of the University of Münster since 2008. In 2012 the Ethological Society made him an honorary member. In 2019, the University Society of Münster awarded Sachser the “Wissen.kommuniziert” special prize for its services in the field of science communication.

Focus of research interests

Sachser's research group is mainly dedicated to basic research. At its core, it is about deciphering the causes and consequences of the behavior of mammals. He himself names three main areas:

  1. Stress, its avoidance and well-being;
  2. Evolution and development of social behavior, with a special focus on observing the prenatal phase and adolescence;
  3. the role of genes and environmental interactions in controlling emotional, cognitive, and social behavior.

He is also interested in interdisciplinary discourse with the humanities and social sciences.
