Geographical location

Nordhausen in the Ostalbkreis belongs to the community of Unterschneidheim and is located near the Bavarian border between the cities of Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen. To be more precise, Nordhausen is around 22 kilometers east of Ellwangen on the edge of the Nördlinger Ries on the Bavarian border. The Nordhausen marking closes the foothills of the Alb to the northeast. In addition, Nordhausen is on the European watershed , on the side towards the Black Sea (catchment area of the Danube ).

The village is characterized by agriculture, although many farmers have given up their businesses in the meantime.

geology

Flatly drawn, bump after bump is lined up in the landscape, formed by deposits on the seabed of the Jurassic Sea around 150 million years ago. 50 million years later, the sea floor rose. Since minerals, especially lime, mud and sand, had been deposited over millions of years, layers of mud, lime and especially clay were formed, all in pure or mixed form. A compact clay bench was suitable for making bricks, as the former brickworks in Harthausen proves.

history

Burgstall west of Nordhausen

The first documentary mention possibly goes back to Bertholdi de Northusen , who appears on November 7, 1108 as a witness in a donation from Liutgard to the Blaubeuren monastery. The place Nordhausen is shown in the Wuerttemberg document book as "not determined", but could coincide with Nordhausen near Unterschneidheim. On the other hand, there is no doubt that it was mentioned in 1153. In this document, the sale of an interest-bearing widow was notarized who, out of necessity, sold her own property in Anhausen to Dean Bruno. He then compensated the Free Burchhard von Nordhausen, who is probably identical with Burchhard von Cronheim , with 3 " talents " in return for giving back to the parish there half of the church tithing from Schneidheim that he was holding back. Count Kuno von Oettigen is listed as a witness . The lords of Nordhausen, who also called themselves von Schneidheim, had their seat on the medieval tower hill castle on the western edge of the village. By the second half of the 14th century at the latest, the castle was no longer inhabited and was in ruins. This emerges from a sales deed dated September 7, 1384. Carl von Gisslingen (Geislingen district of Unterschneidheim) and his wife Catharina von Mannsberg sold the Burgstall in Schneidheim (Snatten) to the Dinkelsbühler citizen Friderich Houer, which they had bought from Catharina der Güssen, the widow of Cunrat von Pfahlheim and her son Rudolf von Pfahlheim .

On January 1, 1974, the municipality of Nordhausen, which was located in the Aalen district until 1972 and then in the Ostalbkreis , was incorporated into the Unterschneidheim municipality.

Attractions

Mention should be made of the beautiful Ölberg chapel on the former castle hill on the western edge of the village. Other sights are the village pond with leisure facility.

coat of arms

On May 24, 1960, Nordhausen was awarded the flag color black and white (black and silver) and the coat of arms "in a split shield in front in silver (white) a continuous black cross, behind in red a silver (white) shell". The Teutonic Order Cross indicates the rule of the Teutonic Order in Nordhausen since 1313. The shell is taken from the coat of arms of the Barons von Eyb . It is intended to commemorate the Commander of the Teutonic Order, Friedrich Carl von Eyb. The church in Nordhausen was built under this (1751).
