North Caucasus Front

The North Caucasus Front ( Russian Северокавказский фронт / Severokawkasski front) was a major unit of the Red Army during the Second World War .

history

The North Caucasus Front was formed on May 20, 1942 from the dissolved Crimean Front and the staff of the North Caucasian Strategic Direction. During the Stalingrad Strategic Defense Operation on July 28, 1942, the units of the disbanded Southern Front were subordinated to the front . Later the front formed the Don and Coastal Groups of Armed Forces. On September 1, 1942, the front was incorporated into the Transcaucasus Front as the Black Sea Group . On January 24, 1943, a new North Caucasus front was formed from the northern group of the Transcaucasus Front, to which the Black Sea group was subordinated on February 5, 1943. On November 20, 1943, the High Command of the North Caucasus Front was transformed into that of the Independent Coastal Army , the subordinate armies were largely disbanded.
