The Nordsee-Ostsee-Straße is a historic Hanseatic trade route that led from Lübeck to Hamburg , thus connecting the Baltic Sea with the North Sea .

history

When Lübeck began to trade more westwards to Hamburg around 1230, the North Sea-Baltic Road, also known as the Elbe-Trave-Weg , gained in importance. In 1241, the two cities signed a treaty to protect their routes. For Lübeck the road was important for the expanding trade to Flanders and England, for Hamburg the road was of great importance for the colonization of the eastern areas, where new cities were founded with Rostock, Wismar, Stettin, Stralsund, Danzig, Riga and Reval.

The Nordsee-Ostsee-Straße led from the Lübeck market square over the Holstenstraße, the Holstenbrücke and the later Holsten Gate (built 1469–1476) and the Puppenbrücke to the courtyard Nebenhof, whose name can still be found today in the Nebenhofstraße. Via Gut Bunte Kuh to Padelügge , Hohenstiege , Hamberge , Stubbendorf , Reinfeld Monastery , Steinfelderhude and Kneeden to Oldesloe . In the Middle Ages, the influence of the city of Lübeck extended up to here.

From Oldesloe the road continued on two tracks. The northern route led via Blumendorf , Neritz and Elmenhorst to Bargteheide . The southern route ran from Oldesloe over the Rümpeler Weg through the Quellenental and the village of Rümpel over the rivers Beste and Hölten Klinken, Fischbek , Mönkenbrook and Hüls to Bargteheide.

From here, the last part of the route, now known as the “Alte Landstrasse”, extended via Timmerhorn , Hunnau and Hoisbüttel to Bergstedt , from where it reached the Hamburg Landwehr via Sasel , Bramfeld and Barmbek near the Kuhmühle . From there, the route led through the former infirmary St. Georg and the Spitaler Tor into the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Another way led into the city via the stone gate located a little further south.
