Norina (low pressure area)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Norina low pressure area was a low pressure area whose storm runners caused massive damage in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony on July 12, 2010, to property damage, traffic obstructions, problems with the power supply, injuries and three fatalities. Wind speeds of up to 120 km / h were measured. The meteorologist Norina Bähr was the godmother when it was named.

Origin and course

With the storm ended a heat wave due to the high pressure area Zadok with temperatures up to 39 ° C ahead (measured peak value 38.8 ° C in Bendorf near Koblenz). A thunderstorm line formed between the high above eastern Central Europe and the low Norina above Great Britain . The gusts of wind occurred in Germany first in the Rhineland and the Lower Rhine, then in the Grafschaft Bentheim and in the Münsterland , followed by the Emsland and East Friesland and finally at Heligoland . Gusts of up to 120 km / h were measured in Aachen . In Düsseldorf there was 20 minutes of heavy rain with a rainfall of 20 liters per square meter.

Damage

The Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia recorded 3,700 missions for the fire brigades and emergency services in North Rhine-Westphalia alone. Rail traffic collapsed in some regions. The old town hall in Bonn was damaged; a falling site fence injured six passers-by. In Cologne , a woman was run over by a truck when she was looking for shelter from the storm in an underpass. In Düsseldorf , a tree fell on a group of school children. In Mönchengladbach , four children were injured by falling branches. In Kempen , a worker was swept off scaffolding from a height of eight meters and seriously injured. In Düren a roofer was thrown from a garage. In Neuss there is a report of a windpipe. Roofs were covered in the urban area, trees fell. In Moers , the flat roof of a building was torn off by a gust of wind, and five people were injured. The Nordhorn Zoo was badly devastated. Nearby, a woman died when a tree fell on a house where she had taken shelter. In Weener , East Frisia, a woman was killed when around 20 poplars toppled over at the same time, presumably due to a tornado; her child survived slightly injured. In the port of Leer the storm reached speeds of up to 110 km / h; a new ship, 157 meters long, broke loose. A "black wall" was reported from Heligoland . On the side island of the dune of Heligoland, one kilometer away , the campsite was completely destroyed, and some holidaymakers were seriously injured.
