Northern Lights - Southern Cross is the sixth studio album by the Canadian folk and country rock group The Band . It was released on November 1, 1975 on the Capitol Records label . The album was the first of the group since Cahoots in 1971, which contained only their own compositions. The musicians also inauguratedtheir new studio "Shangri-La" in California with Northern Lights - Southern Cross . The sound of the album is much more influenced by the then very modern synthesizer sounds than the band's early albums. The overlaying of many synth tracks was made possible by using a 24-channel mixer .

Northern Lights - Southern Cross came in 1976 in the US Billboard album charts to number 26, a rather slight success after the successes of the previous years while working with Bob Dylan . Criticism, however, saw the album at least as a significant improvement on its predecessors Cahoots and Moondog Matinee . All Music Guide calls the album the band's comeback album and even praises it as the group's best album since their second album in 1969.

In addition, the single Ophelia, released in February 1976, was the band's first entry in the Billboard singles charts since 1973. Ophelia reached number 62.
