The Band , also known as The Brown Album , is the second studio album by the Canadian country rock group The Band . It was released on September 22, 1969 on the Capitol Records label . It reached number 9 on the Billboard 200 , the American album charts , and number 25 in Great Britain . The band received almost exclusively positive reviews and is now an absolute rock music classic . It was also included on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the 500 best albums of all time , where it was number 45.
The Band was the group's first album on which Robbie Robertson came to the fore as a songwriter . From a stylistic point of view, however, it did not represent a significant development from its predecessor, Music from Big Pink . The band continued to orientate themselves towards the roots-oriented country and folk rock that had already shaped their debut album .
Two singles were released from The Band . Up on Cripple Creek was released on September 29th with the B-side The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down . The single managed in 1970 in the Billboard Hot 100 a seat 25. Rag Mama Rag was published in February 1970. The song made it to the states, although only ranked 57, made in the UK Top 40 , but surprisingly a place 16th
