The Rauli ( Nothofagus alpina ), also called Rauli-beech or Rauli-Südbuche , is a deciduous tree from the genus of the beech in the family of the beech family (Nothofagaceae). Chilean names for this tree are raulí and ruilío.

description

The Rauli is a deciduous tree that reaches heights of growth of up to 40 m in natural locations and almost 30 m in Europe. The treetop of young trees is narrow and lively with thick, sloping branches. The crown of older trees is broadly conical. The bark of the trunk is dark green, with many lenticels on the young tree ; with age, the bark is greenish-gray with evenly distributed brown cracks that continue into the thicker branches. The twigs are green, later dark brown and very rough due to the small warts. The buds are chestnut brown, narrowly conical and about 1 centimeter in size. The 4 to 8 cm long leaves with a yellow stem have 15–18 distinctly deepened pairs of nerves. The autumn color is golden yellow to carmine red.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.

distribution

The Rauli is native to central Chile and the western Argentine province of Neuquén .

The tree is hardy in Central Europe . The Rauli is unusually vigorous and is therefore also being planted in Germany in experimental forestry .

Systematics

The two botanists Eduard Friedrich Poeppig and Stephan Ladislaus Endlicher placed the plant in the beech genus ( Fagus ) in 1838 by listing the two taxa Fagus alpina and Fagus procera . Both taxa were moved to the genus of the beeches ( Nothofagus ) by the Danish botanist Anders Sandøe Ørsted in 1871 and were given the taxa Nothofagus alpina and Nothofagus procera . Today Nothofagus alpina is the valid taxon and Nothofagus procera is only a synonym. Further synonyms for the species are:

  • Fagus nervosa Phil.
  • Nothofagus nervosa (Phil.) Krasser

Wood

This tree species produces a gray to red-brown wood. It is suitable for medium loads in interior construction, for furniture, woodturning work. It is easy to work with and easy to polish, but not weatherproof.
