description

Notholirion koeiei is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of growth of up to one meter. The onion is oval and on average about 5 cm long and 3 cm wide, it is surrounded by several layers of black paper-like cover. The upright stem is between 8 and 9 mm in diameter and is hollow. There are 12 to 13 leaves on the stem , they are stalked and linear. The leaves are up to 40 cm long and 2 cm wide, they are bent down towards the tip and criss-crossed by several furrows in the longitudinal direction. The leaves reach overall higher than the stem to the height of the flower .

The purple to pale purple flowers are arranged in panicles of 20 to 30 individual flowers. They sit on bracts similar to the leaves, but much smaller (up to 7 cm long). The flower stalks are curved but upright, at the time of flowering they are 1 to 1.5 cm long, but at the time of fruit they are up to 3.5 cm long. The individual hermaphrodite, threefold flowers are initially upright, then turn into a nodding position. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are bent back at the tip, they stand free and are about 4 cm long and 1 m wide. They are darkly streaked lengthways. The six stamens are free. The filaments are up to four centimeters long and of the same color as the perigone . The anthers are up to 9 mm long (usually 4 to 5 mm).

The capsule fruit then stands upright again. After flowering, oval capsule fruits up to 2 cm long form. In which there are brown oval seeds up to 0.5 mm thick .

distribution

Locations of Notholirion koeiei

The species was first collected in 1892 by Joseph Bornmüller in the mountains near the city of Yasd in Iran and planted in the city's botanical garden. He then found a second small population at Shah Bazan (32 ° 47 'N, 48 ° 39' E). The first description of the type carried out by Karlheinz Rechinger Although in 1955, but there were no complete until 1990 plants of the species before, it lacked both an onion as well as a capsule fruit. In 1988, AH Al-Khayat discovered a small population of the species in Iraq near the city of Aqrah (36 ° 46 'N, 43 ° 52' E). Copies of this collection then led to a new description.
