Notholirion is a genus in the family of Liliaceae (Liliaceae). It consists of only 5 types. The genus is closely related to the lilies ( Lilium ) and the genus Fritillaria , to which some species were previously included.

description

Notholirion are perennial , herbaceous plants and reach a stature height of 60 to 150 cm, in the case of Notholirion macrophyllum 18 to 30 cm. The bulbs are narrowly egg-shaped to almost cylindrical and are made up of the thickened roots of the leaves close to the ground, they are protected by a thin, brown skin. The roots are numerous, on their upper part they form breeding bulbs, these are egg-shaped and consist of several white scales under a solid protective skin. Notholirion are monocarp, so the plants die after flowering, but leave behind several small bulbs, which in turn are ripe after a few years.

There are 2 to 24 flowers per grape-shaped inflorescence . The bell-shaped or cup-shaped threefold, hermaphrodite flowers have six similarly shaped bloom cladding ( Tetalen ) which are pale colored to strong violet (except Notholirion campanulatum ). The ovary is three-chambered. Elongated capsule fruits are formed. There are numerous winged, flat seeds in each fruit capsule.

distribution

With the exception of Notholirion koeiei , which is widespread in Central Asia, the genus has its area in the Himalayas . The species of the genus are, mostly alpine, native to Myanmar , China (three species), Afghanistan , Bhutan , India , Nepal , Sikkim as well as Iran and Iraq . Notholirion bulbuliferum , Notholirion macrophyllum and Notholirion campanulatum prefer cool and moist locations in the shade in humus soil, while Notholirion thomsonianum and Notholirion koeiei prefer Mediterranean location conditions.
