Nothovernonia is in 2011 by the genus bill asters ( Vernonia split off) plant genus within the family of the daisy family (Asteraceae). The only two types are common in tropical Africa .

description

Vegetative characteristics

The Nothovernonia species grow as perennial herbaceous plants that reach heights of up to 70 centimeters. The clearly ribbed stems are erect from the base and finely haired with simple trichomes .

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The leaf stalks are 0.2 to 2.0 millimeters long. The elongated to lanceolate leaf blades are sparsely hairy on the upper side and the main nerves on the underside are densely hairy. The entire surfaces of the leaf blades are dotted with glands. It is pinnate with about six pairs of lateral nerves.

Inflorescences and flowers

The terminal or from the axils of the upper, receding leaves, clearly zymic total inflorescences can contain several cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence stems can be short or long. The leaf-like bracts at the base of the broad, bell-shaped flower heads can be small or large. In involucre which are about five strongly stepped rows bracts arranged pressed. The bracts have a dark central stripe and are egg-shaped to almost oblong with a pointed upper end, which has a dark, rarely pale awn . The pale edges of the bracts are dry-skinned and the outer surface is covered with numerous spider-web-like hairs starting from the median. There are no chaff leaves or trichomes on the flat bottom of the cup .

The flower heads contain about 30 to 65 ray florets . The five purple petals are fused with glandular throat. The upper part of the throat and the corolla lobes protrude from the pappus during the anthesis . The crown lobes are covered on the outside in the upper area with upright, strong hair. The stylus have a lignified ring-like knot at their base and are covered with thick hair at the bottom, which also covers about 1 millimeter of the stylus shaft.

Fruits and seeds

The prismatic achenes have eight to ten ribs and their surface is covered with numerous idioblasts with small, narrow raphids . The inner part of the white or reddish brown pappus consists of many, closely spaced bristles and reaches less than two thirds of the length of the petal. The outer part of the pappus is formed by shorter, lanceolate-shaped scales which are also close together.

Sets of chromosomes

The basic chromosome number is x = 9 , at least in Nothovernonia purpurea .

Occurrence

The natural range of the Nothovernonia species is in tropical Africa . It extends there from southern Senegal in the west via Rwanda , Sudan and Uganda to Ethiopia , Kenya and Tanzania in the east. To the south, the distribution area extends to Angola and Malawi .

Systematics

The genus Nothovernonia was split off from the genus Vernonia in 2011 by Harold Ernest Robinson and Victoria Ann Funk in PhytoKeys No. 3, p. 26, (28) . This separation is justified with the geographically separate distribution area, the different shape of the inflorescences, the appearance of the bracts and the pollen morphology . The generic name Nothovernonia means "false vernonia ".

The genus Nothovernonia belongs to Subtribus Centrapalinae in the tribe vernonieae in the subfamily Cichorioideae within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae or Compositae).

According to the first description, two species are assigned to the newly established genus Nothovernonia :

  • Nothovernonia amblyolepis (Baker) H.Rob. & VAFunk . Vernonia amblyolepis Baker isa synonym .
  • Nothovernonia purpurea (Sch.Bip. Ex Walp.) H.Rob. & VAFunk is the type . Synonyms include Linzia purpurea (Sch.Bip. Ex Walp.) Isawumi and Vernonia purpurea Sch.Bip. ex Walp.
