Party Intellectuals Your turn YRU Still Here?

Your Turn is the second studio album by Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog . It was released on Northern Spy in2013.

Origin and style

Your Turn was released 5 years after Ceramic Dog's debut album, Party Intellectuals, was released . Compared to its predecessor, Your Turn contains a lot more vocals, the songs are shorter. According to Marc Ribot, the album was made because “the band wanted to have fun”.

The songs on the album are very diverse - from instrumental free jazz -inspired Your Turn or Prayer , on an interpretation of jazz standards Take 5 (originally by Dave Brubeck Quartet ) attached to the Beastie Boys reminiscent We Are the professionals , to the Protest Songs Bread and Roses (based on a feminist poem from 1911, later a labor movement song) and Masters of the Internet .

reception

The album was rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on Allmusic . The review ended by stating:

“The whole album is a blast. Ribot's vocals have never been anything to write home about, but they suit this material perfectly. Instrumentally, this band can do nearly anything. Party Intellectuals may have set the bar high, but Your Turn is definitely a worthy follow-up. "

“The whole album is explosive. Ribot's singing has never been something worth writing about, but it fits the material perfectly. When it comes to instruments, the band can do practically anything. Party Intellectuals set the bar high, but Your Turn is definitely a worthy successor. "

- Sean Westergaard

A review in the New York Times found that some of the instrumental songs could have done well with vocals, while some of the bitter vocal songs would have been better without vocals. The album is a wild mixture of reggae , no wave , post-punk , psychedelic à la Band of Gypsys and 1940s swing , the interpretation of Take Five is great.

"It's a cranky record that gets exciting entirely on its own schedule. It doesn't trust you and may want to bite you. "

“It's an eccentric album that is exciting in its own way. It doesn't trust you and could bite. "

- Ben Ratliff

According to All About Jazz , the album is more consistent than its predecessor, Party Intellectuals , but the author of the review criticized the quality of Ribot's lyrics and vocals. The instrumental songs are the best, z. B. Take Five . The reviewer stated that, contrary to the message from Masters of the Internet , Your Turn would only take out individual songs (digitally). Accordingly, it was rated with only 3.5 stars.

The well-known music journalist Robert Christgau also attested the album to be more catchy than its predecessor and particularly highlighted Take Five and Masters of the Internet .

On the Free Jazz Blog, the album was rated with the maximum possible 5 stars. It brings together many different aspects of Ribot's diverse work. The author of the review on PopMatters comes to a similar conclusion, rating the album with 8 out of 10 points.

Trivia

Bread and Roses was released as a free download on the anniversary of the start of Occupy Wall Street . Masters of the Internet is an expression of Ribot's commitment against Spotify and illegal music downloading on the Internet.
