chronology
Your turn YRU Still Here? -

YRU Still Here? is the third studio album by Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog . It was released in 2018 on Northern Spy (USA) and Yellowbird Records (Europe).

Origin and style

YRU Still Here? was released 5 years after Ceramic Dog's previous album, Your Turn , and 10 years after the debut Party Intellectuals . Compared to its predecessors, the lyrics of the album are very explicitly political. In a meeting it is stated that “With the arrival of YRU Still Here? [...] the Occupy Wall Street outbursts at Your Turn sound almost quaint by comparison "(" With the arrival of YRU Still Here ?, the Occupy Wall Street rants of Your Turn now sound almost quaint by comparison. ").

Musically it is as diverse as the previous albums and builds on elements from Afrobeat ( Pennsylvania 6 6666 ), Surf Rock ( Agnes ) or Noise Funk ( Oral Sidney With a “U” ), but with clear references to punk . The title of the opening piece already refers to Nancy Spungen , who became famous around the legendary punk band Sex Pistols . Some of the songs relate more or less directly to the political and social controversies of the Trump presidency, including Personal Nancy , Muslim Jewish Resistance (in which Trump, Steve Bannon , Scott Pruitt and Jeff Sessions are mentioned by name) or the one against immigration and Customs Enforcement directed Fuck La Migra . The album's political message is also explained in a short text in the album's booklet. The text on Pennsylvania 6 6666 , written by Shahzad Ismaily , is a reminiscence of his childhood in Danville , Pennsylvania and the racism experienced at that time.

In a positive (4.5 out of 5 stars) review on Allmusic , the author sums up:

“Despite its title, YRU Still Here? is less about asking questions and more about Ribot, Ismaily, and Smith taking a defiant stand. "

“Despite the title, it's YRU Still Here? less about asking questions and more about the insubordinate point of view of Ribot, Ismaily and Smith. "

On Pop Matters, YRU received Still Here? 8 out of 10 stars with the comment:

“Marc Ribot and Ceramic Dog will never take the easy way out, even during the best of times. Sometimes, that's how you stumble upon a future classic. "

“Marc Ribot and Ceramic Dog would never take the easy route, even in the best of times. Sometimes it is like that when you stumble upon a future classic. "

The album also received a positive review in the German jazz magazine Jazzthing , in which, in addition to the basic political tone, the musical diversity was emphasized. From Down Beat , YRU became Still Here? Rated 3.5 stars, an “angry, rightly angry, sonically feverish and engaging variation of the party band tradition” (“an angry, righteously indignant, sonically feverish and engaging variation on the party band tradition”). The album was also rated A- in the review on the Vinyl District Internet portal and the special combination of politically powerful lyrics and musical quality and diversity was emphasized.
