action

The Czech Karel Novak has a dream. He would like to become a farmer in the USA. When he arrives in New York from Europe , he learns on Ellis Island that the "entry fee" to the land of opportunity has risen to $ 200. Karel is missing $ 142 and he will be sent back to Europe on the next ship. When the ship is about to leave New York Harbor, Karel jumps overboard and swims to shore. Without money, he now wanders the streets of Manhattan . Hungry, he steals donuts and is caught by the young dancer Sylvia Dennis. The young woman takes him to her apartment, where she lives with her underage brother Frank. Karel can stay here for the time being. He and Frank earn some money delivering newspapers. Eventually he gets a job as a taxi driver and dreams of becoming a millionaire and marrying Sylvia.

When Frank comes to court because of his persistent school refusal , he is sentenced to be placed in a state institution. His sister Sylvia is only allowed to take him back once she is married. When the boy is finally taken out of his sister's care, Karel even risks deportation to help Sylvia. Karel is lucky, however, and the nice police officer Murphy provides the illegal immigrant with legal papers and demands that Karel marry Sylvia until dawn.
