Numenera

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Numenera is a pen and paper role-playing game with a science fantasy scenario . It was developed by the US role-playing game designer Monte Cook with financial support from a crowdfunding campaign and published in 2012.

description

Numenera's scenario corresponds to Earth, but about a billion years in the future. The game world is (English for.: As "The Ninth World" , the ninth world ), since a total of eight civilizations arose before the time horizon of the scenario and disintegrate. Remnants of these previous civilizations, such as old technical legacies, can be found in traces throughout the game world and are commonly referred to as Numenera. The current civilization is technologically and z. Sometimes also socially at a medieval level, but also makes use of the many ancient, far more progressive legacies of previous civilizations without understanding or mastering them exactly. Based on Clarke's third law , according to which “any sufficiently advanced technology cannot be distinguished from magic”, the Numenera is also treated similarly to magic in a fantasy scenario.

Gameplay

The character creation of Numenera is kept simple. The player must complete a statement at the beginning:

I am a (description) (class) who (focus) .
(English: I am a __________ __________ who _________s.)
  1. An adjective is required as a description that expresses the most conspicuous character trait.
  2. For class you can choose from the Glaive (a warrior type), the Nano (a technology user / magician) or the Jack (derived from Jack of all trades ).
  3. For focus, a verb is required that describes what the character is particularly known for or what special talent he has.

A 20-sided dice is required for the game, with which typical role-playing tests can be carried out to determine whether a character's ability is successful or not. The game is less rewarding for successfully fighting opponents than exploration and discovery made during the course of the game.

Emergence

Numenera was developed by Monte Cook, who previously u. a. worked for TSR and Wizards of the Coast on Dungeons & Dragons as an RPG designer for many years , including one of the lead developers for the Planescape scenario . Cook described his game world in the tradition of unusual game forms such as Planescape , DarkSpace or Chaositech , influenced by stories far in the future such as Gene Wolfe , Michael Moorcock or Jack Vance and optically inspired by works by the French artist Moebius .

To finance the basic set of rules, Cook started a crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter online platform with the aim of collecting US $ 20,000 from private supporters. Within the first 24 hours, the financing target was doubled. Finally, with $ 517,255 from 4,658 supporters, it set a new record for the most successful tabletop role-playing game funded by Kickstarter. It set the previous record for the 5th edition of the role-playing game Traveler . With bonus goals , so-called stretch goals , the set of rules, which was originally limited to the basic set of rules, was expanded into a comprehensive product line. Many publications appeared exclusively digitally and not in print. Cook was supported, among others, by Kieran Yanner as the chief graphic artist and in the editorial department by Shanna Germain.

At the beginning of January 2015, the German role-playing online community Orkenspalter TV and Uhrwerk Verlag successfully concluded a financing project on the crowdfunding platform Startnext that made it possible to translate the basic rules.
