Vegetative characteristics

Nymphoides species are usually perennial, rarely annual herbaceous plants . They are mostly floating leaf plants that cover lakes and ponds like a carpet. They usually form short rhizomes with many stem-like runners ( stolons ). The stem flooding in the water and sometimes forming loose root node ( Nodien ). The alternate, sometimes almost opposite, leaves are petiolate and simple with a smooth leaf margin. They have underwater leaves when they are young and floating leaves as fully grown plants.

The flowers are in groups at the nodes above the water surface. The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and rarely four, mostly five-fold. They are mostly heterostylish . Most of the five sepals are only fused at their base. The mostly five petals are mostly only fused at their base and have a fringed edge. There is only one circle with five free, fertile stamens . The ovary is on top. The style ends in a two- to three-lobed scar.

The capsule fruits contain many seeds.
