Nzega is a district in the Tabora region with the administrative center in the city of Nzega . The district is bordered to the north by the region Shinyanga , on the east by the district Igunga , the south and the west by the district Uyui .

Nzega is 6961 square kilometers and has around half a million inhabitants (as of 2012). The district is part of the Tanzanian Central Plateau at an altitude between 1100 and 1300 meters above sea level. The gently rolling land is cut through by valleys whose rivers only carry water temporarily. Only in the extreme northeast is there open arable land with fertile soils.
The climate in Nzega is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . In the months of June to September there is hardly any precipitation, from November to April it rains an average of 100 to 150 millimeters per month. The annual amount of precipitation in the capital Nzega is 822 millimeters per year with an average temperature of 22.9 degrees Celsius.

Nzega has the highest population of any district of Tabora. Annual growth fell from 2.4 percent before 2002 to 1.9 percent. That is the lowest growth rate in the region.

Facilities and services

  • Education: There are 146 primary schools and 31 secondary schools in the district for the education of young people (as of 2019).
  • Health: In 2008 there were two hospitals, six health centers and 37 pharmacies available.

Economy and Infrastructure

The district has large areas of forest, miombo forests on good soils, acacia forests in dry areas.

  • Agriculture: Two thirds of the total working population were self-employed farmers, 17 percent were otherwise self-employed and 12 percent worked in the household (as of 2012). A study in two villages in the district showed that 85 and 95 percent of the residents there farmed and 20/30 percent also kept livestock. A third to a half also sold crops. The main food crops are rice and maize, the highest numbers of livestock were chickens, cattle and goats.
  • Railway: The railway line from Tabora to Mwanza and Geita runs from south to north through the western part of the district.
  • Roads: In Nzega the national road T3 from Dodoma via Singida to Rwanda and the national road T8 from Mbeya via Tabora to Shinyanga and Mwanza cross.
