Kaliua is a district of the Tabora region in Tanzania with the administrative seat in the city of the same name Kaliua . The district borders the Geita and Shinyanga regions in the north, the Uyui district in the east, the Urambo district in the southeast, the Katavi region in the south and the Kigoma region in the west .

Kaliua has an area of ​​14,050 square kilometers and around 400,000 inhabitants (2012 census). The district is located on the central high plateau of Tanzania around 1100 meters above sea level. The drainage is to the west into Lake Tanganyika . The largest river is the Ugalla , it forms the southwest border and flows into the Malagarasi . To the west are the two lakes Nyagamoma and Sagara. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification . The annual rainfall is between 900 and 1300 millimeters, it rains most from November to April, the months June to September are almost free of rain. The temperature ranges from 16 to 33 degrees Celsius, with October being the warmest month.

The population rose from 234,442 in the 2002 census to 393,358 in 2012. This corresponds to an annual growth of over five percent and a doubling time of only thirteen years. In 2012, forty percent of those over the age of five spoke Swahili, three percent spoke English and Swahili. More than half were illiterate.

Facilities and services

  • Education: Kaliua has 100 primary schools with a total of 625 classrooms. There are 104 pupils in one classroom, the national average is 45. The 76,500 pupils in these elementary schools are taught by 1663 teachers, so there are 46 pupils for one teacher. There are 278 male and 135 female teachers in secondary schools, the teacher-student ratio is 1:16 (as of 2019).
  • Health: Three health centers and 33 pharmacies are available to provide medical care for the population.

Economy and Infrastructure

  • Agriculture: Around eighty percent of the population live from agriculture. Corn, beans and sweet potatoes are mined for personal use, while tobacco, nuts, cotton and sunflowers are intended for sale. More than half of the tobacco produced in Tanzania comes from Kaliua. In 2012, of the 63,000 households, over forty percent owned farm animals. Mainly poultry and cattle were kept.
  • Beekeeping: The district produces 550 tons of honey annually.
  • Railway: The Tanganyika Railway runs right through the district and runs from Dar es Salaam on the Indian Ocean to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika. The railway line to Mpanda branches off at Kaliua station .
  • Roads: The main road connection is the national road T18 from Tabora to Kigoma.

Nature reserves, sights

  • Moyowosi Game Reserve: In the north, the district has a share of the 6000 square kilometer Moyowosi Game Reserve, which was established in 1981. The reserve is known for its large populations of buffalo, lions, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, hippos and crocodiles as well as good bird watching opportunities.
  • Ugalla Game Reserve: The Ugalla Game Reserve, established in 1965, is located in the south of the district. It offers hunts and walking safaris over an area of ​​5000 square kilometers. Wildebeest, leopards, lions, baboons, buffalo, bush pigs, hyenas, ostriches and zebras can be found in miombo forests and vast steppes.
