Extraction and presentation
3,3'-Dimethoxybenzidine can be obtained by reacting the methyl ether of o -nitrophenol with zinc dust and sodium hydroxide solution to form the hydrazo compound and then reacting it with hydrochloric acid .

3,3'-Dimethoxybenzidine is a flammable brown solid that is practically insoluble in water. It decomposes when heated, producing nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide . When exposed to light, it turns violet.
