OUBEY

OUBEY (* 1958 ; † 2004 ) was a German visual artist .

life and work

OUBEY studied architecture at the University of Karlsruhe from 1979 to 1983 . His early artistic work was created parallel to his architecture studies.

Inspired by Fritz Haller , best known for the USM Haller modular furniture system he developed , OUBEY came into contact with his visionary projects such as the planning of prototypical spatial colonies and the futuristic conception for global urban planning (Integral Urban). The knowledge from these projects, his visionary thinking and his interest in natural science and mathematics, philosophy, poetry, science fiction and art formed the intellectual background for his artistic work.

In 1983 he made the decision to live and work as a freelance artist from now on.

From 1987 to 2001 he worked in the former Karlsruhe studio of Markus Lüpertz , where, among other things, his avant-garde computer painting on the Amiga 500 was created. With what he called "PhotonPaintings", he held his first sales exhibition in 1992. He then decided to withdraw from the public eye in order to be able to work as free as possible from outside influence for an indefinite period of time.

The move to a new studio and the twelve years of experience of independent creativity, which exclusively followed his own artistic vision, made it possible for him to imagine a public presentation of his pictures again for the first time. When OUBEY was killed in a traffic accident in August 2004, he was in the midst of productive preparation for this step.

In the limited time of his artistic creation, a work was created that comprises more than 1200 works. As part of the “Mindkiss” project, initiated and managed by OUBEY's partner Dagmar Woyde-Koehler, this work is now gradually being made available to the public posthumously.

Mindkiss project

The Mindkiss project aims to preserve OUBEY's life's work, to develop it and to bring it to the public posthumously .

The results from a first phase of the project work were presented to the public for the first time on March 23, 2010 in the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe. In the meantime, numerous videos and documentaries have also been published freely accessible on the website and on YouTube.

The project includes:

• the five-volume book OUBEY Mindkiss , which has meanwhile won three design awards, designed by Stefan Sagmeister from New York.
• the OUBEY Experience Film (2010) by the Berlin director Bernd Müller , who approaches the artist OUBEY and his very own understanding of the world, art and cosmos in an experimental way.
• the Global Encounter Tour with the so-called OUBEY Encounters
• the documentary OUBEY Encounters - The Journey (2013)
• the documentary OUBEY - An Element of the Universal (2014) (English title: OUBEY - An Element of the Universal )
• the documentary OUBEY in Africa (2016)

Movies

For the OUBEY Encounter film project, Dagmar Woyde-Koehler travels as part of the so-called Global Encounter Tour with original pictures to people who, in their professional activity or because of a special personal interest, deal with questions that also affect OUBEY and his artistic work Meaning were. The spontaneous reaction to the previously unknown image was documented on film. 25 of these short films can be seen on YouTube and on the website and are listed in the table below.
