OXXO is a retail chain in Mexico and belongs to the beverage company Fomento Económico Mexicano (FEMSA).

The first OXXO stores opened in Monterrey in 1978 . Shops in Chihuahua , Hermosillo and Mexicali followed in the following year . The company has been operating independently since 1994, but still as part of FEMSA . In February 1999 the 1000th OXXO store was opened. In 2011, the company operated more than 8,400 shops in 350 cities across Mexico. It was the largest retail company in the country. A further 1,200 shops were planned for 2011.

The over 8,400 branches are served by 12 distribution warehouses (operational bases) located in the following Mexican cities:

An OXXO can be found practically on every corner in larger cities, next to motorway filling stations and near toll stations. The typical shop is painted in the colors red and yellow and contains articles for daily use, food, a large selection of drinks (non-alcoholic and alcoholic) and a small dining area with a microwave and fast food. Electronic prepaid credit from all major Mexican telephone companies is also sold at the checkout. The OXXO shops are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week - at night you are mostly served through a peephole for security reasons. In some cities, such as B. Mérida, the supermarkets are accessible 24/7. All OXXO shops serve a total of over 6.5 million customers every day.

Direct competition from OXXO is, for example, the 7eleven chain , which also operates in Mexico.
