The trolleybus Potsdam was the trolleybus system of the Brandenburg state capital Potsdam . It existed from 1949 to 1995 and supplemented the Potsdam tram, which had been in service since 1880 . The trolleybus drove exclusively in the districts of Babelsberg and Drewitz , where two lines were operated electrically. The transport company in charge was - as with trams and urban bus services - the VEB Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam , from which the ViP Verkehrsbetrieb Potsdam GmbH emerged in 1990 .

history

January 1990: Škoda 14Tr number 972 on line B in Karl-Liebknecht-Straße

To better connect the eastern districts of Potsdam, it was decided in 1941 to set up a trolleybus from Babelsberg. Despite the war , it was possible to procure the necessary overhead line material including vehicles. On October 1, 1949 the first trolleybus line A between Babelsberg Goethestrasse and Drewitz Ort was opened with a length of 5.8 kilometers. A second line B from Babelsberg Nord to Bergstücke Steinstraße followed in 1956/57.

A third line C was later set up between Drewitz station and Babelsberg station. To this end, turning loops were built at both end points . In Babelsberg there was a block loop over Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, Rudolf-Breitscheid-Straße, Daimlerstraße and Lutherplatz. The establishment of this line had a political background: in the increasingly sharp tensions between the occupying powers, trains on the Berlin-Blankenheim railway ended at Drewitz station. Passengers to Berlin had to take the Berlin S-Bahn through West Berlin from Babelsberg station . With the completion of the Berlin outer ring and the discontinuation of the S-Bahn to Berlin, line C also disappeared shortly afterwards. The turning loop at Babelsberg station was later dismantled.

Another trolleybus line D, independent of the rest of the network, was to be set up between Holzmarktstrasse and Menzelstrasse at Glienicker Bridge . The tram traffic was switched to omnibus operation because of the poor track condition. The maintenance of the trolleybuses on this line should take place in the Holzmarktstrasse depot . However, due to the poor procurement situation in the German Democratic Republic - for both line material and vehicles - these plans were rejected. Instead, tram operations were resumed a few years later after a renovation in two sections.

On August 30, 1971, the section from Drewitz station to Drewitz Ort had to be closed due to construction work for the Am Stern development area. Until the early 1990s, the two lines then operated as follows:

A , from June 1991 690 : Babelsberg Goethestrasse - Babelsberg station - Drewitz station - Bergstücke Steinstrasse (closed from May 1990 to January 1993)
B , from June 1991 691 : Babelsberg Nord - Babelsberg train station - Drewitz train station - Bergstücke Steinstraße

The trolleybus depot was on Stephensonstrasse and was reached via an operating route from the Am Findling stop. At the beginning of the 1980s there were plans for network expansion in the direction of Schlaatz and Waldstadt as well as for new lines to the surrounding area. These plans failed because of the tight capacities in the GDR and the political events of 1989 and 1990. The plan to convert the bus route D (Rehbrücke - Schlaatz - Babelsberg - Waldstadt I - Eichhorst station) was discussed again at the beginning of the 1990s , however, these plans also failed. The electrification of the Wetzlarer Bahn finally divided the network of the trolleybuses at Drewitz station into two parts, as a catenary crossing could not be realized there for technical reasons. Among other things, safety reasons played a role here, at that time the railway line was prepared for ICE traffic for maximum speeds of up to 160 km / h. On November 26, 1992, the Potsdam magistrate therefore decided to purchase two duo buses to bridge the gap on line 690. Classic trolleybuses continued to run on line 691 (Drewitz station - Babelsberg Nord).

Due to the poor condition of the vehicles from GDR times, the Potsdam trolleybus was available from the beginning of the 1990s. Due to the tight financial situation of the city of Potsdam, new acquisitions were out of the question, this problem finally led to the complete cessation of the Potsdam trolleybus operation. On January 16, 1995, the Dekra ordered the immediate shutdown of almost all old trolleybuses, some of the load-bearing parts were rusted through.

The last pure trolleybus operated on January 18, 1995 in passenger service on line 691, the two duo buses still operated occasionally on both lines. Due to storm damage, the trolleybus service in Potsdam was finally stopped on February 2, 1995. The catenary infrastructure was removed in the following weeks. In the former depot on Stephensonstrasse, the City of Potsdam's Green Space Office is now located.

Trolleybus 976 in Eberswalde

Trolleybuses of the types LOWA W602a, Škoda 8Tr , Škoda 9Tr , Škoda 14Tr , Ikarus 280.93 and duo buses of the type Mercedes-Benz O 405 GTD (numbers 993 and 994) operated in Potsdam .

Škoda 14Tr number 976 was the only Škoda trolleybus to be partially modernized in 1993/94 and repainted in the corporate colors of the Potsdam transport company, while all other cars were fully advertised . After the discontinuation, the remaining Škoda trolleybuses, except for car 976, were sold to Ostrava in the Czech Republic ; from 2002, 6 cars were brought to Almaty in Kazakhstan . There, the wagons were retired and scrapped between 2005 and 2008. 3 more went to Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine and 3 to Chernivtsi , which had been retired there by 2019. Trolleybus 976 is now a historic vehicle at the Eberswalde trolleybus .

The two duo buses 993 and 994 were also originally intended to be delivered to Eberswalde, but they could not be used there due to technical deviations. So they came to Kapfenberg in Austria , where they were used until the end of the trolleybus service in March 2002. Converted to diesel buses in December 2001 and February 2002, they were in regular service until 2007 and were then sold.
