The Kapfenberg trolleybus is a former trolleybus operator in Austria . It existed from October 20, 1944 to March 25, 2002 and connected the city of Kapfenberg with the neighboring city of Bruck an der Mur . The operator was the Mürz Valley Transport Company (MVG).
history
In addition to a main line 1 connecting the cities (from autumn 2001 line 10) there were two side branches in Kapfenberg that were served by line 2 (from autumn 2001 line 20). Originally, the MVG did not use line numbers at all; these were only introduced on June 2, 1996. A special feature of the Kapfenberg company was the use of duo buses and the scheduled operation of a section of the route in Redfeld with the auxiliary drive . As a further specialty, the conductors' operation in Kapfenberg was only given up on July 3, 1995, and thus comparatively late in comparison to other cities. There was a flow of passengers from the rear, where the conductors' seat was, to the front.
Despite some route extensions in the 1980s, the decline of the Kapfenberg trolleybus began in the 1990s. In the last few years, electrical operation has only taken place to a very limited extent. Because the MVG no longer had enough trolleybuses, from 1996 there were only four trolleybuses and four duo buses in stock, in the last few years before the shutdown, more and more diesel buses had to run in mixed operation . In addition, the duo buses also mostly ran in diesel mode.
As early as 1991, the trolleybus operation was completely stopped on Saturdays from 3 p.m. and only resumed on Monday morning. The reason for this was the deviating route layout on weekends, which could not be achieved with the existing catenary infrastructure.
The imminent four-lane expansion of the federal highway between the two cities and the line changeover carried out in the summer of 2002 ultimately led to the closure of operations. Both measures would have required extensive modifications to the overhead line. Another problem was the outdated and worn overhead line infrastructure. After the setting, the overhead line was dismantled and the dismantling was completed in early November 2002. Only in the depot did the catenary remain until at least 2007.
vehicles
Over the years, the MVG procured 57 trolleybuses of various types (plus trailers ), including numerous used vehicles from other Austrian companies and from the Federal Republic of Germany from 1959 onwards . Usually it was a small series, the resulting variety of types was characteristic of the Kapfenberg trolleybus. Only 20 cars came to MVG as new vehicles. In 1969 the first articulated wagons arrived in Mürz Valley, in 1986 the first trolleybus with auxiliary drive and in 1990 the first duo bus. Two more solo cars from Graz and Salzburg were on loan from MVG between 1944 and 1945/47. Seven trolleybuses , including four from Vienna, two from Sankt Lambrecht and one from the Kaiserslautern trolleybus , were never used, but only served as a spare part dispenser for similar sister vehicles .
From 1996 onwards, the company handed over trolleybuses that were no longer needed to Salzburg, Romania and Serbia . Only the four duo buses were converted to pure diesel buses on the occasion of the cessation of operations and continued to run on their traditional routes for a few years after 2002. The following table lists all MVG trolleybuses sorted by type or the year of commissioning (column "Inb."), The column "Ausm." Indicates the year of retirement:
