The Oderbruchzoo is a small zoo that became known nationwide through media reports during the threat from the Oder flood in 1997 . Special features in addition to animal husbandry are the attached handicapped village and regular cultural events, also to the neighboring country Poland , as well as the multiple granting of EU funds for further expansion. The Oderbruch Zoo is located five kilometers east of the spa town of Bad Freienwalde (Oder) in Altreetz in the Brandenburg district of Märkisch-Oderland in the Oderbruch .

history

The Oderbruchzoo emerged from the school garden of the local school. On June 1, 1986, it was inaugurated as the first school zoo in the GDR. The former LPG Altreetz supported the zoo by providing food, among other things. Originally, animals that were customary in the area were kept, and exotic animals such as monkeys and camels from Tierpark Berlin were occasionally donated .

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the zoo was taken over by the district's municipal sponsorship and was able to use some of the EU funding for further expansion. So a handicapped village could be built on the zoo grounds. At the beginning of 1994 the zoo was privatized, whereby the district continues to support the financing. The animal feed is provided by the Altreetz agricultural cooperative, which has now been established. In the years that followed, the animal enclosures and the animal population were expanded, and a Norwegian fairy tale house made of wood was also built .

The Oder flood of July and August 1997 - the so-called flood of the century - threatened to flood the Oderbruch Zoo. As a precaution, the animals were evacuated by the Bundeswehr to the higher-lying hinterland. Since the Oder dyke in this section could be held in spite of severe damage and sagging in the Hohenwutzen area due to the massive deployment of the Bundeswehr, the fire brigade , the technical relief organization and other helpers, the Oderbruchzoo was ultimately not flooded.

During this threat, the zoo was frequently visited by political celebrities with corresponding media coverage. The reporting during the Oder floods helped the Oderbruchzoo to make further donations of money, goods and animals. The zoo was then modernized with the donations. The number of visitors to the Oderbruch Zoo has increased steadily since then.

In addition to the animals, the art gallery, which has now been built, is a new cultural attraction. Exhibitions of German, Polish and international folk art , such as African sculptures, take place there. There are also regular readings and discussion events in the gallery, often with international participation. One focus is on expanding contacts with neighboring Poland.

On June 29, 2006, Peter Wilberg (manager of the Oderbruchzoos) and his colleague Søren Rasmussen from the Polish Safari Park Świerkocin signed a cooperation agreement, the aim of which is to make both institutions better known in the other country and to promote the exchange of information and experience. Another goal is the desired bilingualism (German and Polish) on information boards and events.

More than 30,000 people visit the zoo annually.

Livestock

Around 60 animals are currently kept on around two hectares in the Oderbruch Zoo. When keeping animals, the climatic conditions in the Oderbruch and the supply options of a small zoo with a low budget must be taken into account.

In addition to various types of domestic domestic and farm animals such as rabbits , goats , sheep , pigs , donkeys (including a Poitou donkey ) and ponies (including two Gotland ponies ), individual exotic animals such as rhesus monkeys , Japanese red-faced macaques , kangaroos , camels , Llamas as well as a rhea are kept.

Holiday village

The handicapped accessible holiday village attached to the zoo enables groups of visitors with and without disabilities to spend a few days in close contact with the animals. This often has a high therapeutic benefit for people with disabilities. Thanks to the provision of EU funds, the disabled village was modernized and expanded during the 2007/2008 winter break.

location

The Oderbruchzoo is located on the southern outskirts of Altreetz in Schulgartenstraße. Altreetz is about six kilometers north of Wriezen and 12 kilometers east of the center of Bad Freienwalde . The distance to the Oder is around 7.5 kilometers.

Not far from the Oderbruch Zoo on the outskirts of Altreetz there is a cycle path that was only completed in 2005 and that was laid out on the disused railway line Wriezen - Altreetz - Neurüdnitz up to the railway bridge over the Oder . There is a connection to the Oder-Neisse cycle path on or parallel to the Oder dike.
