The Odessa was a cruise ship for the state-owned Soviet shipping company Black Sea Shipping Company, which entered service in 1975 . She was originally supposed to be completed as Copenhagen for Paquet Cruises and the Danish Cruise Line before the shipping companies withdrew from the construction contract and the ship was sold to the Soviet Union. Until it was retired in April 1995, the Odessa was in use around the world and was stationed in the United States , among other places . After several changes of ownership and renaming the ship in 2007 was to cancel the Indian Alang .

history

The Copenhagen was built under the hull number 1085 in the Vickers shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness and was launched on December 20, 1972. The original client was the French shipping company Paquet Cruises and the Danish Cruise Line, who wanted to operate the ship together. The first planned name of the ship, Prins Henrik Af Danmark , was later changed to Copenhagen .

After the launch , the Copenhagen was towed to the Swan Hunter shipyard for completion . The work on the ship was finished in May 1974, but in the same year Paquet had ended the cooperation with the Danish Cruise Line and had withdrawn from the contract for financial reasons. The ship was therefore launched and offered for sale.

The state-owned Soviet shipping company Black Seas Shipping Company became the new owner in May 1975 and operated the ship between Liverpool and Leningrad under the new name of Odessa . During the winter months, the Odessa was stationed in the United States for cruises on the US market. Between July and August 1978 she briefly supported the elder Mikhail Kalinin on the route between Stockholm and Leningrad.

In 1982 the Odessa had to stop its cruises in the United States after the then US President Ronald Reagan banned Soviet ships from stationing in the United States. From then on she was mainly used for trips in Europe. After the end of the Soviet Union, the ship was registered in Ukraine in 1992 .

On April 12, 1995, the Odessa was arrested in Naples because of open claims by the shipping company and did not return to active service. In 1999 it passed under the name Odessa I in the possession of Golden Globe Shipping, based in St. Vincent and the Grenadines , which they in turn sold in 2001 to Bowline Maritime, which is also based there. The ship, renamed Odessa again, returned to Ukraine in 2002 and was from then on in the eponymous city of Odessa . Efforts to maintain and reuse were unsuccessful. After a further four years of layover, the Odessa was finally sold to Chittagong for demolition in December 2006 and renamed for the transfer trip to Sydney . In January 2007 the owner sold the ship to another scrapping yard in Alang , India , where it finally arrived on January 19, 2007 for demolition.
