Oedwies (also: Ödwies) is a wasteland in the municipality of Achslach ( Regen district ) in the Bavarian Forest .

geography

The Oedwies mountain meadow, completely surrounded by forest, is located at an altitude of approx. 1030 m above sea level. N. N. on the same ridge between the mountains Hirschenstein and Kälberbuckel about four kilometers west of the parish village of Achslach . Oedwies is accessible in summer with hiking trails and in winter with cross-country trails.

history

In 1559 a Leopold Puckel obtained permission from the Viechtach caste office through the purchase of a property to settle in the "tree-emptied meadow" , the Oedwies. Around 1620 the agricultural property, called Grassölde Oedwies , belonged to the Oberalteich monastery . Around 1713 it came to the Baron von Leoprechting and finally in 1842 to the Bavarian state.

Forsthaus Oedwies

In 1846 a massive forester's house was built on the site of the dilapidated farmhouse . The forester's house is a listed building. On the way to Achslach , a primitive house for foresters was also built.

In 1849 the forester was granted the license to drink and a restaurant was set up on the upper floor. In 1880 , 15 residents were registered in the Oedwies wasteland, which has always belonged to the municipality of Achslach . In 1895 a station for measuring the precipitation was set up, the predecessor of the forest climate station, and a year later a wooden outbuilding with two new service and guest rooms. In 1905 another small wooden house was added, which was inhabited until 1953. A first telephone facilitated private and business business since 1905.

In April 1954, the Mitterfels Forestry Office had the management of the forester's house ceased and in 1956 the last of a total of 21 foresters left his office. In 1958 the Oedwies forestry department was finally given up.

The Oedwies is still owned by the Bavarian state and managed by the Mitterfels Forestry Office. Meadows and forests are under nature protection and are looked after by the environmental department of the Regen district . In 1979 the forester's house was rebuilt by the Bayerwaldbrigade 11 - the guest room on the first floor remained in its original condition - and was used until 1994 for winter training for soldiers. The forester's house is currently leased by the Achslach reservist comradeship.

Next to the forester's house is the listed wooden chapel of the Scourged Savior . The chapel was built around 1848.

Mountain festivals

Regular mountain festivals have been attested on the Oedwies since 1846. These Hirschenstein festivals usually took place after the Whitsun festival. Until the Second World War , the Oedwies was one of the most popular excursion destinations in the Bavarian Forest. A last forest workers festival was held in 1975. Since 2008, the Hirschenstein Festival with mountain service in the Hirschenstein holiday region has been taking place every year in September on the Oedwies.
