Of Cabbages and Kings is a vocal quartet from Cologne , whose oeuvre is characterized by jazz singing and whose style the members call Neo A Cappella .

history

The ensemble was founded in 2015 by the jazz singers Veronika Morscher , Sabeth Pérez , Laura Totenhagen and Rebekka Salomea Ziegler , who met in the Federal Jazz Orchestra . The band's name comes from a poem by Lewis Carroll ("The Walrus And The Carpenter") from "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There" (1872). The singers arrange and compose the works for the ensemble themselves. They interpret texts by William Shakespeare , Wilhelm Busch , Ingeborg Bachmann , Erich Kästner and Hannah Arendt, among others .

The artists describe the genre of Of Cabbages and Kings as Neo A Cappella , a genre that the Cologne pianist Pablo Held created for them. By this they understand “a different kind of a cappella singing - a kind that arouses curiosity, that is unconventional, that gives us as artists freedom, creates space for us to be four individuals,” said Veronika Morscher in an interview. At the same time, the members remain active in their own formations, from modern jazz to folk to electronic beats. The formation's appearances (e.g. at the Burghausen Jazz Festival ) received a lot of praise from music critics .

In December 2018 Of Cabbages and Kings presented his debut album Aura , which was released on the Klaeng Records label .

Zola Mennenöh has been singing in the ensemble in place of Sabeth Pérez since autumn 2018 .

Prizes and awards

In May 2016 Of Cabbages and Kings won 3rd place at the Sparda Jazz Awards. Since the same year the singers have been concert scholars of the Werner Richard - Dr. Carl Dörken Foundation. In October of the same year they reached the final of the Acapella Awards Ulm. In April 2017 the band was nominated for the finals of the International A Cappella Competition in Leipzig .

In spring 2018 Of Cabbages and Kings took second place at the 10th European Junior Jazz Prize Burghausen . In June 2019, the group was awarded second place at the Tampere Vocal Music Festival in Finland.
