Greater Gabbard is a British offshore wind farm in the southwestern North Sea . When it was completed in September 2012, it was the largest offshore wind farm in the world with 140  wind turbines and a total nominal output of 504  MW . The wind farm, located in the northeastern area of ​​the Thames estuary , is operated by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) and Innogy . The cost of the project (excluding grid connection) was estimated at £ 650 million.

An expansion of the wind farm under the project name Galloper was put into operation in 2018. 56 wind turbines increase the installed capacity of the wind farm by 353 MW.

Greater Gabbard is about 14 miles off the coast of Suffolk County and the water depth is between 24 and 34 meters. The wind farm consists of two areas with a total area of ​​147 km², which are separated from each other by the inner Gabbard and The Galloper sandbanks .

Greater Gabbard is part of the Round 2 tender and was originally developed by Airtricity and Fluor , who founded the Greater Gabbard Offshore Winds joint venture. After the purchase of Airtricity by Scottish and Southern Energy , the latter also took over the shares held by Fluor in the project, making SSE the sole owner. In November 2008, RWE finally got involved with a 50% share.

Greater Gabbard was approved in October 2007. In 2008, preparatory work on land began, and offshore work began in 2009. In January 2011, the first two wind turbines fed electricity into the public grid. In November 2011, all the monopiles and the transition pieces were in place; of the 122 wind turbines installed to date, 83 had already fed electricity into the grid. The last wind turbine was installed on September 7, 2012. Since there were initially still doubts about the safety of some of the foundations, the wind farm was only accepted by the operator in May 2013.

The average wind speed at a height of 80 meters is 9 m / s, the forecast energy yield is 1750  GWh per year. According to Innogy, this can supply 530,000 average British households. The capacity factor is therefore around 40%.

Maintenance of the turbines is carried out by Siemens. In October 2017, the maintenance contract was renewed for another five years.

140 Siemens SWT-3.6-107 wind turbines with a nominal output of 3.6 MW were installed in the Greater Gabbard wind farm . They have a rotor diameter of 107 m with a rotor area of ​​around 9,000 m², the hub height is 78 m. The distance between the systems is at least 650 m. Monopiles up to 70 meters long were used as foundations , which were driven more than 20 meters deep into the seabed. Two transformer platforms also belong to the wind farm . These are connected to the wind turbines via a total of 172 km of 34 kV submarine cables and transform the electricity from the medium voltage level to 132 kV. The electricity is then conducted via three export cables, each 45 km in length, to the transformer station in Leiston, where it is fed into the public electricity network.

Expansion as Galloper offshore wind farm

The Galloper offshore wind farm is an extension of the existing wind farm and has been in operation since March 2018. The investment volume was 1½ billion British pounds. Construction started in November 2016. Another 56 Siemens SWT-6.0-154 wind turbines with a total output of 353 MW were built. The output of the individual turbines was increased from the original 6.0 MW to 6.3 MW, so that the output increased by 17 MW. Galloper is supposed to provide electricity for 380,000 British households.

History and construction

The expansion was originally driven by Innogy and SSE. At the end of 2014, the project was temporarily put on hold after SSE withdrew, but then continued with new partners. The final investment decision was made in October 2015.

In June 2016, a safety zone of 500 meters was set up around the planned plant locations of the Galloper wind farm so that construction work on the construction site can begin. The first foundation was installed at the end of December 2016. Half of the foundations were installed in mid-February 2017. The installation of the foundations was completed on March 28, 2017, two months earlier than planned. The first wind turbine was built in May 2017. At the end of September 2017, 24 of the 56 turbines were installed.

On November 5, 2017, the first electricity was generated in the wind farm and 38 turbines were installed. In December all 56 turbines were installed. The full commissioning took place at the end of March 2018.
