The Ogoki River is a river in the Thunder Bay District and Cochrane District in the Canadian province of Ontario .
The river has its origin in Wabakimi Lake . It flows northeast through a series of lakes: Whitewater Lake , Whiteclay Lake , Ogoki Reservoir, and Ogoki Lake . In the lower reaches, the river splits over a distance of 30 km into two arms, which unite again. At Ogoki the river flows into the Albany River , which flows into James Bay . The river is 480 km long. In 1943 the Hydro-Electric Power Commission of Ontario , now Ontario Power Generation , built a dam which, since its completion, has diverted much of the water of the upper Ogoki River to Lake Nipigon and the Great Lakes . The purpose of this hydraulic engineering project was to increase the usable amount of water for the hydropower plant at the Niagara Falls below Lake Erie .
The Ogoki River flows through Wabakimi Provincial Park . It is used for canoeing and fishing.
The Ogoki Reservoir north of Lake Nipigon is formed by a dam at Waboose Rapids . The reservoir has a length of 70 km and covers an area of about 150 km².
A provincial park is being planned for the section of the river below the Ogoki Reservoir, across Ogoki Lake to the splitting of the river.
