Olaf Karnik

Olaf Karnik (* 1962 in Cologne ) is a German author , journalist and DJ.

Life

Karnik was a freelance writer for the music magazine Spex from 1981 to 1985 . It was only in the 1990s that he studied theater, film and television studies, German and political science at the University of Cologne . He has since published books on soul and reggae and was a writer for Spex from 1993 to 1998 and occasionally into the 2000s. In 1998 he was also editor-in-chief of Spex for a few months. As a music journalist, music critic and book reviewer, he has since been featured in print media such as Neue Zürcher Zeitung , Intro , Frankfurter Rundschau , Riddim , Süddeutsche Zeitung , FAZ , Testcard , literatures , and texts on art . He has published numerous book contributions on the subjects of pop, film and film music for the Suhrkamp-Verlag and Verbrecher-Verlag. He is the author of radio features and reports, among others. a. for Deutschlandfunk , SWR2 or for the broadcast WDR3 Open Sounds . Between 1995 and 1997 he was chief author at the German music television broadcaster Viva 2 . In 2000 he and Christoph Dreher were involved in the conception of the six-part TV series Fantastic Voyages - About the history and themes of music videos for 3sat and ZDF .

Teaching

Between 2009 and 2013 he worked as a lecturer in the popular music and media course at the University of Paderborn . Since 2012 he has been a guest lecturer at the Munich University of Television and Film .

Musician and dj

Karnik has been a DJ since 1985, mainly in Cologne. In 1985, together with Gerald Hündgen , Frank Schäfer, Michael Reinboth from Compost Records and Reinhard Jellen, he founded The Soulful Shack - Germany's No. 1 soul DJ team . The team was active until 1995. From 1988 he was also involved as host and DJ at the Cologne Rave Club with Gerald Hündgen, Lothar Gorris, Dirk Scheuring, Ralf Niemczyk and Jürgen Schwan.

Between 1995 and 1997 he played guitar in the Cologne band Geneva .
