history

The Asim Ferhatović Hase stadium in the Koševo district

Construction of the stadium began two years after the end of World War II in 1947. It was completed in 1950.

As the home ground of FK Sarajevo, the stadium was an important part of the Yugoslav football league. Big teams like Manchester United , Inter Milan , FC Bologna , Hamburger SV , Red Star Belgrade , Partizan Belgrade , Dinamo Zagreb , Hajduk Split played there against the home team. One of the biggest events was the city derby against arch rivals Željezničar Sarajevo , when the stadium was almost always sold out.

Internationally, the stadium became famous for hosting the 1984 Winter Olympics . The stadium was extensively renovated for this event. It was the venue for the opening ceremony.

In the Bosnian War , the stadium was badly damaged and misused, including as an army base and the surrounding training grounds as a burial site.

After the war, the stadium was repaired and became the home ground of the national soccer team of Bosnia-Herzegovina . The Bosnian-Herzegovinian national team played their first game in the stadium against Italy in 1996 . This game ended with a 2-1 victory for the Bosnian-Herzegovinian national team and was celebrated as their first victory. After that, the national teams of Germany and Denmark made guest appearances in the stadium.

FK Sarajevo still plays its home games in the Premijer Liga here today .

Big bands and singers hold their concerts in the stadium. These included B. U2 or the Bosnian singers Dino Merlin and Hari Mata Hari .

On August 21, 2014, the stadium was sold out for the first time in over eleven years. 32,000 fans watched the match between FK Sarajevo and Borussia Mönchengladbach , which was part of the qualification for the UEFA Europa League . Borussia won away with 2: 3 goals.
