Oliver Lamar Poole (* 18th April 1922 in Gloster , Mississippi ; † 27. June 2009 in Ruston , Louisiana ) was an American American football poker players and - coach . He played as end and defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Detroit Lions and in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Colts .

Player career

College career

Ollie Poole came from a sports-loving family. His three cousins Jim , Ray and Barney Poole , as well as his nephew Paige Cothren, were all professional football players. Poole studied from 1941 first at the University of Mississippi , where he played football , baseball and basketball . From 1943 he served in the US Marines , but was initially able to continue his studies as part of a training program for the American military at the University of North Carolina . He was also active as a football player in North Carolina . Oliver Poole served four years in the Marines and was also used in the Pacific War. Poole was released as a sergeant and then continued his studies in Mississippi.

Professional career

The New York Giants had secured the services of Ollie Poole as early as 1944 . They drew him 147th in the NFL Draft in the 15th round. Poole never ran for the Giants. In 1947 he played for the New York Yankees, who were based in the AAFC, a competitive league of the NFL. With the team trained by Ray Flaherty , he was able to move into the AAFC final this year, where they failed, however, 14: 3 at the Cleveland Browns .

In 1948 Poole ran for the Baltimore Colts supervised by Cecil Isbell before retiring from the Detroit Lions after the 1949 season. After his career, Poole taught and coached college and high school teams in Louisiana and Mississippi. Ollie Poole died of cancer and is buried in Roseland Cemetery , Gloster. A street on the University of Mississippi campus is named after the Poole family football players.
