Olympic runner-up Albert Tyler ( right ) with his teammate Robert Garrett, winner of the shot put / discus throw, second long jump, third high jump
April 10, 1896, 3:40 p.m.
The initial height was 2.40 meters. The two Americans entered the competition at 2.80 meters after their Greek competitors had already been eliminated. Because the marathon runners had crossed the finish line , the competition had to be interrupted for a long time and it was amazing that it could be brought to an end at all. After there had been a Greek victory in the marathon, there was cheering and excitement that made everything else a minor matter. In any case, the wrestling matches planned for that day could no longer be carried out. However , after all Greek jumpers were eliminated, the pole vault attracted so little interest that the possibility of its continuation was perhaps due to this circumstance.
