The winners qualified for the quarter-finals.
In the event of a tie after extra time, a replay was played.

Only three out of eight games were played. The games that were not played were:

The teams in bold made it to the quarter-finals. Egypt did not take part due to the Suez crisis . China canceled because the Republic of China had also been admitted to the games. Hungary stayed away from the Games because of the invasion of the Soviet Union . Turkey and South Vietnam canceled for financial reasons. The game between the USA and Yugoslavia was moved to the quarter-finals.
