At the XXVI. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , a modern pentathlon competition was held.

The team classification, which had existed since 1952, was deleted from the program. At the same time, the format of the competition was fundamentally changed: The competition was held on a single day instead of the four or five days that had been the case before. Due to the resulting logistical challenges, the field of participants was limited to 32.
