The Omoloi ( Russian Омолой ) is a 593 km long river or stream in the northeast of the Russian Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Geographical location

The Omoloi rises in the western part of the extensive East Siberian mountains in the east of the Verkhoyansk Mountains . Its source is on the south- eastern flank of the elongated Sietindenskikamm at about 650  m .

The predominantly northward current flows through a sparsely populated area and in the upper and middle reaches between the Sietindenskikamm in the west and the Kulargebirge in the east. He passes the village of Namy , which is just before the influence of the Ulachan-Baky . He then leaves gradually - the west of the river located Ulachan-Sis ridge passing - the East Siberian mountains and reached no later than the downstream of the confluence of Ulachan-Kjuegjuljur located Chajur where he turns to the northwest, with the Jana-Indigirka lowland the western part the extensive East Siberian lowlands ; About 150 km east of the Omoloi flows with the Jana the western of the eponymous streams of this sub-area.

Finally, the Omoloi flows into the Laptev Sea , part of the Arctic Ocean, on the east coast of the Buor-Khaya Gulf .

Hydrology, ice drift and tributaries

The catchment area of the Omoloi is about 38,900 km² and has swamps and very numerous lakes , especially in the lower reaches . In this area, the still and flowing waters are covered by ice on average from late September or early October to late May or early June . When the ice and snow melt in summer and the permafrost thaws, there is strong flooding .

The tributaries of the Omoloi include with orographic allocation (l = left-hand side, flowing from the Sietindenskikamm (or crossing it); r = right-hand side, coming from the Kulargebirge ) and - if known - length (viewed downstream):

  • Buchuruk (l; 138 km)
  • Ulachan-Baky (l)
  • Sieminde (l; 98 km)
  • Kuranach-Jurjach (l; 203 km)
  • Arga-Jurjach (l; 264 km)
  • Ulachan-Kjuegjuljur (r; 187 km)

Flora and fauna

The Omoloi, which runs through the tundra with typical vegetation of mosses and lichens and boreal coniferous forests (taiga), is rich in fish, for example Arctic vendace ( Coregonus ) and salmon fish (such as Omule ) live in the estuary . Its catchment area is also the habitat of steppe wisps among others .
