The Nacionalinis vėžio institutas (German National Cancer Institute ) with 945 employees (2013) is the largest research institute in Lithuania and the fifth largest hospital in Vilnius , a university hospital and the only specialized Lithuanian clinic for oncology , the only multidisciplinary cancer research center in Eastern Europe with a European OECI Approval (as of July 2013). The institute is central to cancer treatment and research in Lithuania. In 2002, by resolution of the Lithuanian government, the institute became the primary institution to systematically guide the treatment and diagnosis of cancer patients and to coordinate these activities. On August 4, 2014, the Institute of Oncology at Vilnius University ( lit. Vilniaus universiteto Onkologijos institutas ) became “Nacionalinis vėžio institutas”.

activity

The institute treats 18,000 patients from Lithuania and abroad every year. 100,000 patients come to the counseling clinic every year. The number of operations is 6,000 per year (2011). In 2011 there were 17 projects with a total value of 74.9 million litas (21.7 million euros). The Institute has been running the nationwide cancer registry since 1978 (cancer registration began in Lithuania in 1957); Since 1993 the register has been a member of the International Association of Cancer Registries and takes part in the activities of the European Network of Cancer Registries .

Institute scientists use modern technologies and methods of radioembolization , genomics , proteomics , transcriptomics, holistic research, nanosciences ( nanomedicine ) and experimental oncology, immunology , epidemiology etc. It participates in the activities of Union internationale contre le cancer (UICC) and is a member of the organization of European Cancer Institutes (accreditation acquired March 14, 2013). The patient-oriented research and work is about the early detection of malignant tumors and full treatment of oncological diseases in order to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cancer. In 2008, six textbooks and twelve educational books were published. The institute is also a scientific base for study and student theses from the faculties of medicine , science , physics, and chemistry . At the Oncology Institute, the doctoral studies in medicine in the field of biomedical sciences (B07) are carried out together with the University of Vilnius.

status

The founder of the institute is the Government of Lithuania . Every year it prepares the activity report for the Senate of Vilnius University and the Ministry of Education of Lithuania . According to its legal form, the Institute for Oncology is a legal entity and a budget institution for scientific research with the status of a university scientific institute. The organs of the institute are: general assembly of scientific staff and other researchers, institute council, director of the institute.

In 2010, the Lithuanian government plans, the Institute for Oncology Hospital (lit. Onkologijos ligoninė ) and the Institute of Oncology of Lithuania (lit. Lietuvos onkologijos institutas to reorganize) because of their regulation (the new founder of the institutions would be the Ministry of Health of Lithuania and the Ministry of Education of Lithuania was ). In 2010, a group of Seimas members submitted an application to the Constitutional Court of Lithuania regarding the constitutional conformity of the plans. In 2011, the draft law on the new institute (Nacionalinio vėžio instituto įstatymo projektas) was approved, but the law has not yet been passed. In 2013 it was planned to rename the institute to the National Cancer Institute ( lit.Nacionalinis vėžio institutas ).

history

On December 1, 1931, a special hospital for cancer patients (with 12 beds) and a research institute (Polocko Street 6) were opened in Vilnius. The most common treatment was the patient with advanced cancer . In 1933 the first X-ray machine was purchased and the pathology - anatomy department was set up. In 1934 the institute became the Vilnius Anti-Cancer Research and Treatment Institute. In 1944 the Vilnius City Oncology Hospital was opened (46 Pylimo St.). In 1945 it was reorganized as the Republic Dispensary for Oncology (lit. Respublikinis onkologijos dispanseris ). There was a polyclinic , inpatient treatment (40 beds), X-ray and radium therapy rooms, an X-ray diagnostic room and clinical laboratories.

In 1979 a new building of the institute and a clinic were built in Santariškės . 15 new specialized multidisciplinary clinical, experimental and diagnostic departments were established there. In 1990 the facility became the Lithuanian Center for Oncology (lit. Lietuvos onkologijos centras ). In 1995 it got the status of a state scientific institution (lit. Valstybės mokslo įstaiga ). In 2002 the center became a university institute (lit. Vilniaus universiteto Onkologijos institutas ).
