Onno
Onno is a male given name of (East) Frisian origin from the area around Groningen and East Frisia .
The feminine form is Onna .
origin
Onno is a diminutive from (East) Frisian. The stem of the name is hardly recognizable, however, so that a clear origin is difficult to prove.
- According to Tammena, the name probably comes from the Old Saxon "unnan" (German: "gönnen"). Raveling refers next to "Unnan" on medium-Dutch ( "treat" as well) "onnan". According to the Duden, the name probably comes from the Old High German “gunnen” or Central Dutch “go-onnen” or “onnen” (both in German with the meaning “gönnen”).
According to these deductions, Onno can be translated as “Der Gönnende”. - According to Seibicke, Onno is the two-stemmed Low German short form of compositions with Od .
Onno is also a male Armenian given name.
variants
Other forms are: One, Onne, Onna , Onke, Onko, Onka, Onneke, Onneka, Ontje, Ontjo, Ontja, Ontke, Ontko, Unne, Unno, Untje, Unke, Uniko; when derived from two-stemmed names also: Omme, Ommo, Umme, Ummo, Umma, Uma.
Historically, the forms ending in -o have been used (almost) exclusively as male nicknames, those ending in -a as feminine nicknames, while the forms ending in -e are not gender-linked.
