Onno Heye Tollef Groß (* 1964 in Cuxhaven ; † October 3, 2016 in Budapest ) was a German marine biologist specializing in deep-sea biology .

Live and act

Great studied from 1984 at the University of Hamburg , the University of Tuebingen and the Canadian University of Victoria biology botany and zoology with a focus on marine biology and participated in a series of research expeditions. He also worked as a freelance science journalist. He was an editor at National Geographic and wrote a. a. for Die Zeit , the Spiegel , the Neue Zürcher Zeitung , mare , diving , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , the Handelsblatt , the dpa and the daily newspaper .

Large-scale scientific contributions for specialist publications, was a conference participant in international environmental protection conferences such as in July 2013 in Bremerhaven and in December 2013 in Bremen and was often cited as an expert in marine biology and environmental protection.

One of his concerns was to avoid littering the oceans with plastic , another to make people aware of the conservation of the ocean ecosystem as early as children and adolescents .

In 2003, Groß was the initiator and founding chairman of the marine protection organization Deepwave . At the same time he was active in Ocean Science & Journalism . His previous operating organizations included The Pew Charitable Trusts and the u. a. World Future Council founded as a foundation by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and Michael Otto . He was a board member of the Bundesverband Meeresmüll eV

In the tropical aquarium Hagenbeck in Hamburg he regularly organized the “Days of the Seas”. Since 2013 he has organized the short film festival “Beneath the Waves” every year in Hamburg. He led actions to clean up beaches and the like. a. at the North Sea.

The European Union advised the European Union on issues of fisheries policy for maritime directives. As a member of the International Fund for Animal Welfare , he was a delegate to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Onno Groß died in an accident in Budapest on the night of October 2-3, 2016 . There he took part in a congress on the subject of plastic waste. The experts judged that his death was "a bitter loss for marine protection".
