Onyx is a hardcore rap group from Queens , New York. Onyx is known for its aggressive, angry and roaring rape.
history
Onyx was founded in 1989 by Fredro Starr, Sonee Seeza and Big DS. Their first release was the vinyl single Ah, and we do it like this (1989). But this received almost no attention. It was only when Fredro Starr's cousin Sticky Fingaz joined the band in 1992 and a demo was given to Jam Master Jay ( Run DMC ) that the career of “Bald-hedz” from Queens got on the rise. Her first album, Bacdafucup (1993), sold two million times, which was considerable for rap music beyond the mainstream at the time. The single Slam sold a million times. After this album, Big DS left the band for reasons unknown.
In 1993, the film Judgment Night released a soundtrack in which rock and hip-hop groups contributed songs together for the concept album. Onyx recorded the title track with the hardcore group Biohazard, also from New York . The associated video also made Onyx known to the metal faction. Onyx worked with Biohazard two more times: as a group on the remix of Slam and in person of Sticky Fingaz on the biohazard album New World Disorder (on the song of the same name).
In 1995, All We Got Iz Us , the band's second album, was released. The musically very dark album was (like its predecessor) not suitable for radio and only sold 500,000 times.
In 1998 the next album was Shut 'Em Down , also released on Def Jam . In terms of sales, this album was between the first two. After that it was quiet about Onyx for a while, which was mainly due to various solo projects (including several trips by Fredro Starr into the film business). Finally, in 2002, the equally aggressive and only moderately successful album Bacdafucup Pt was released. II on Koch Records. Just a year later, the album Triggernometry was released on the independent label D3 Entertainment. Despite the lack of promotion and marketing, it was at least a financial success for the group, as the conditions with the new label were better than with Def Jam.
The former group member Big DS died on May 22, 2003 after suffering from cancer at the age of 30 in Jamaica, a neighborhood in the New York borough of Queens . Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz were mainly active as actors in the following years.
In the summer of 2006, Fredro Starr started a new project with Yung Onyx. A first mixtape called Bang Out Part 1 was released in September 2006. In autumn 2007 the Madface Clothing Line was released. In addition, the instrumental version of Last Dayz was used in the film 8 Mile by Eminem .
In 2008, the DVD Onyx: 15 Years of Videos, History & Violence was released with all music videos recorded by the group and individual members with optional commentary and rare recordings from the early 1990s. For the compilation albums Cold Case Files: Murda Investigation (2008) and Cold Case Files Vol. 2 (2012) Onyx collaborated with Method Man and Naughty by Nature, among others . A new single ( Belly of the Beast ) with video, which for the album CUZO was determined, 2012. According to published a feature on A $ AP Fergs album Trap Lord (2013) Onyx published in the spring of 2014, the entirely from producer team Snowgoons produced Album Wakedafucup . It was the first publication in over ten years and featured guest contributions by Sean Price , Papoose and Cormega . The single We Don't Fuckin Care (feat. A $ AP Ferg & Sean Price) was released from the album .
