Open Water 2 (Original Open Water 2: Adrift ) is a thriller starring Susan May Pratt , Richard Speight Jr. , Niklaus Lange , Ali Hillis , Cameron Richardson and Eric Dane . The location was Malta .

For marketing reasons, the illusion of a sequel to Open Water was created, but the film is not from the same producers, but has the same basic idea of the struggle for survival in the water in a seemingly hopeless situation. According to the production, the plot is based on a true story.

action

A group of old high school friends - Amy and James, Zach, Lauren, Dan, and his new girlfriend Michelle - take Dan's boss's yacht out to sea for the weekend . Amy and James are also bringing their baby Sara. Dan arranged the weekend getaway and pretends that the expensive yacht is his.

After sunbathing, James, Zach, Lauren and Michelle jump into the ocean for a swim. Amy suffers from aquaphobia after seeing her father drown while swimming as a child. However, Dan picks her up and jumps into the water with her, hoping that this will help her overcome her fear of the water. Amy is paralyzed by her fear and in the subsequent hectic it becomes clear that no one had lowered the bathing ladder. The six quickly realized that they couldn't climb the high walls of the yacht and get back on board on their own.

Michelle panics. James tries to get into the boat from the bottom and bumps his head. He later dies of a skull fracture in Amy's arms. Zach tries to get into the boat with the knife, but is stopped by Dan and unintentionally stabbed to death. Michelle swims away from the others and drowns. Lauren swims away for help and does not return.

Eventually Dan breaks his mask and uses a sliver of the lens to wedge himself into a crack in the fuselage. This allows Amy to climb back into the boat via Dan and lower the ladder. But Dan does not climb into the boat, but moves away from the ladder. Amy, who as a child couldn't save her father from drowning, overcomes her fear of the water and jumps back in to save Dan. The next morning a fishing cutter circled the yacht. The baby can be heard crying while Amy stands absently on the deck. At the end the camera pans to Dan, who is lying motionless on his stomach, also on the deck.

The credits read: “Amy, your baby and Dan survived. Dan and Amy never saw each other after that. "

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged that the film skilfully visualized the "apparently hopeless situation", but still lumbered around "almost without surprise". The "characters and their behavior" are "predictable", so that the viewer "does not want to show any real interest in their fate."
