The Oreosomatinae are a subfamily of the Oreosomatidae within the Petersfischischen and comprise nine out of ten species of the family (all except Pseudocyttus maculatus ). They occur in the Atlantic , the Indian Ocean , the Pacific and around the Antarctic over the continental slopes at depths of 400 to 1800 meters.

features

Species of the Oreosomatinae are 15 to 47 cm long and have, like all St. Peter's fish-like, a high-backed, laterally flattened body, large eyes and two separate dorsal fins. The first is usually supported by 6 to 7, more rarely 5 or 8, fin spines, the first being much shorter than the second. Between the first three dorsal fin spines there is a locking mechanism with which the fin can be fixed in an upright position (convergent in the Grammicolepididae , Zeidae and Zeniontidae ). The pelvic fins have a fin spine and 6, rarely also 5 or 7 soft rays. The lower edge of the dentals (lower jaw bone) is sawn, as is the rear edge of the supracleithrum, a bone of the shoulder girdle. The gill cover is covered with spiky scales along its protruding edges. The hypuralia 1 and 2 have grown together and with the vertebral body, as are the hypuralia 3 and 4, but they are usually not fused with the vertebral body (convergent in Paracen pacificus ). The number of vertebrae is 37 to 40, less often 36 or 41 vertebrae are counted.
