Orlando Grossegesse

Orlando Alfred Arnold Grossegesse (* 1960 in Rosenheim , Germany ) is a German philologist , Romance philologist , Germanist , Hispanist , Lusitanist , translator and author. He is the founder of the Department of German Studies at the University of Minho and is considered to be an expert on the life and work of the authors Eça de Queiroz and José Saramago .

Research into the relationships between German-speaking and Lusophone cultures and literatures in the 19th and 20th centuries is another focus. His extensive philological, journalistic and translation work includes over a hundred publications in books, encyclopedias, specialist journals (from 1986 to 2003 regularly in the Revue Tranvía ), specialist journals and specialist anthologies. As a translator, he made the first works of the later cult author Enrique Vila-Matas and the Portuguese modernist Mário de Sá-Carneiro known.

Life

Orlando Grossegesse studied Romance philology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich from 1981 to 1986 with a focus on Hispanic and Lusitan studies as well as communication studies . In 1989 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on the novel by Eça de Queiroz.

Initially working as a journalist and translator, he led a. a. for the Opt Art magazine of the photographer Bruno Hausch interviews with Antoni Tàpies and Miquel Barceló and wrote for the cultural supplement of Diário 16 (Madrid) under the direction of César Antonio Molina. He then went to the University of Coimbra as a scholarship holder in 1990 and then as a lecturer at the Universidade do Minho in Braga , where he still works as a lecturer and researcher at the Faculty of Humanities (Instituto de Letras e Ciências Humanas). Since 2000 he has been a full professor alongside modern German literature in the areas of Lusitan Studies , Comparative Studies , Cultural Studies and Translation Studies .

From 1990 to 1993 he built up the German Department, which was continued by Erwin Koller until 2004 . After his retirement he headed the Bragens German Studies again until 2008. In addition, from 2000 he took on various positions at the Universidade do Minho, a. a. Repeated Vice Dean and was responsible for the restructuring of the humanities courses and their organization in the Bologna Process (2002-06). He devoted himself increasingly to European language policy in higher education and founded the language center BabeliUM in 2009 , which he headed until 2015.

2011 visiting professor at UNESP (Araraquara). From 2013 to 2016 he was the coordinator of literary studies at the CEHUM ( Centro de Estudos Humanísticos ) research center founded by Vítor Aguiar e Silva , which he then headed until 2019. Together with the linguists Esther Rinke and Cristina Flores, he developed the double degree master's degree in German-Portuguese studies with the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main, which started in the 2016–17 academic year. In 2017 he initiated the research group Humanistic Studies on Migration and Marginalization (EHum2M), which he has coordinated since then.

He has been a member of the German and International Lusitanist Association since 1993. From 2006 to 2010 he was Vice President of the Portuguese Association of Germanists (APEG), of which he has been a member since it was founded in 1995. As a committed Eça de Queiroz researcher, he has been closely associated with the Fundação Eça de Queiroz (FEQ) since it was established in 1991. In 2003 he was accepted into their cultural council and has been organizing the international summer courses since 2013. From 2015 to 2019 he was a member of the administrative board and the board of directors of the cultural council. Under the direction of Carlos Reis (philologist) he has been running the specialist journal Queirosiana since 2004 . As part of the FEQ, he founded the Center for Literary Translation CET-Tormes ( Centro de Estudos de Tradução ), which opened in May 2016 with the authors Gonçalo M. Tavares and Kristof Magnusson (also translators from Icelandic).
