UNESP in Franca

The Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP, German  State University of São Paulo " Júlio de Mesquita Filho " ) is a state university in the state of São Paulo in Brazil .

The UNESP was formed by the amalgamation of several research institutions and smaller universities in 1976. The research institutions and universities located throughout the state were active in areas such as medicine, veterinary medicine, physics and engineering. As a result of the merger and nationalization, the second largest university in Latin America was founded alongside the University of São Paulo . With the establishment of the "university chain" UNESP, more funds could now be raised for the state university, thus creating more study places and deepening and expanding the research areas. It was also the aim to create a centralized education for all students, to set up a central administration and to concentrate the subject areas at only one university.

Despite the merger, the individual UNESP locations remained independent in determining their research areas and the number of students. Over the years, more locations have been added and courses and subject areas have been added to the curriculum.

development

In order to enable the most practical training possible in the courses, five research farms , so-called fazendas , were founded for teaching and research by 2009 , as well as a university hospital in Botucatu , three veterinary clinics, three clinics for tooth preservation, a center for oral oncology, and a center for special Dental medicine, as well as a center for social law and 1900 laboratories. In the current academic year 2009, the income of the UNESP is estimated at 1.39 billion R $ , which corresponds to approximately 550 million euros.

Many of the institutes taken over in 1976 were established as secondary schools long before the merger. Other institutes were established with the aim of training as schools for e.g. B. Pharmacy and Dentistry founded. The initial faculties were the Institute of Dentistry in Araçatuba and São José dos Campos , the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Science of Jaboticabal , the University of Engineering and Medicine of Botucatu as well as today's UNESP Araraquara , which already in 1923 for research in the fields Dentistry and Pharmacy was founded, making it the longest-running campus of UNESP. In 1956 the institute in Araraquara was taken over by the State of Sao Paulo and since 1976 it has been part of the UNESP universities. The campus in Bauru was added to the system in 1988.
