Orlester Watson Cavanaugh (born February 2, 1939 in Indianapolis , † November 3, 2005 ibid) was an American drummer and singer. He was also known by the stage names Toni Cavana and Lee Patterson . He had the greatest success with the gospel singing group Lee Patterson Singers.

Life

Cavanaugh came to Germany as a GI in the 1950s. There he was stationed as a paratrooper for the United States Air Force near Mannheim . At this time he also performed as a singer to entertain the troops and got to know all of Germany. After completing his military service , he returned to Germany and joined the Hamburg beat scene . In 1960 he played several appearances as a drummer with the Jets, a live band with Tony Sheridan , who regularly appeared in the top ten on Hamburg's Reeperbahn . With the jets he was nicknamed “ Neger-Tony ". With Tony Sheridan he also played in the "Star Combo" around 1963/64, where he occasionally shared the vocals with him. From spring 1962 to autumn 1962 he was active in the band The Bats. In 1964 the LP Rock'n Twist Slop Hully Gully was released under the name Toni Cavanaugh and the Liverpool Triumphs on the Sommerset Records label .

In 1965 he received a soloist contract with Teldec . Under the name Toni Cavana and his Beat Brothers, the single Nobody is an Angel / B-side was released in 1966 : Then say no , which Cavanaugh sang in German. The "Beat Brothers" included Kingsize Taylor (guitar), Howie Casey (saxophone), John Philipps (saxophone), Jimmy Doyle (drums), and members of The Blizzards. This was followed by the single Little Clementine (B-side: My most beautiful day ). In 1968 the album Oh Soul Mio was released as Toni Cavana and the Fabs.

He also sang with the hard rock group Asterix (predecessor of Lucifer's Friend ). In the 1970s he tried to establish himself as a gospel singer under the stage name Lee Patterson both solo and with the Lee Patterson Singers . With this group he had his greatest success.

As a member of the Chicago house band Rock Circus , he sings as Lee Patterson with Herbert Hildebrandt (ex- The Rattles ) in 1979 together with Sweet Nothing on the compilation Live in Chicago . In 1980 the songs Sittin 'on the Dock of the Bay and Singin' the Blues were the last sign of life of the singer and drummer on the live compilation in the Star Club .

While researching his book A Thousand Needle Stitches , Bernd Matheja found out that Cavanaugh traveled back to the USA and never played music there again. Suffering from an aneurysm, he remained in a nursing home in Indianapolis until 2005, where he died on November 3, 2005. Because of his illness, he could hardly remember anything from his time in Hamburg. He has a son and a grandson in Hamburg.

His song Hummeltwist from the LP Rock'n Twist Slop Hully Gully was published on numerous compilations during the Hamburg Beat era and is also included as an intro by Franz Dobler's compilation Perlen Deutschsprachiger Popmusik Vol. IV: On the Road Again Mama .
