Osmunda japonica is a species of the royal ferns ( Osmunda ) within the royal fern family (Osmundaceae). It isnativeto East Asia.
features
Osmunda japonica is a deciduous, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. Very young, curled fronds are densely covered with long, flat hair. It forms two different fronds: sterile and fertile; seldom is a fertile segment above the sterile on the same frond.
The sterile fronds are 50 to 80 centimeters long and two-pinnate. The almost sessile leaflets of the sterile fronds are 4 to 6 cm long and 1.5 to 2 cm wide. The bald or slightly hairy leaflets have a slightly serrated edge.
The fertile fronds, the sporophylls , are 20 to 50 centimeters long and bipinnate. The sporangia stand together in dense groups on the rachis of the leaf sections of the first order.
Occurrence
Osmunda japonica is native to East Asia , primarily Japan , China , Korea , Taiwan, and Russia's Far East only on Sakhalin . Osmunda japonica thrives in damp forests and requires a lot of sunlight.

The first publication of Osmunda japonica was made in 1780 by Carl Peter Thunberg in Nova Acta Regiae Societatis Scientiarum Upsaliensis , 3, 209. A homonym is Osmunda japonica Houtt. published in Maarten Houttuyn : Natuurlijke Historie , 2 (14), 1783, p. 57, plate 97, figure 1.
