history

16. – 19. century

Osterwald was first mentioned in a document on December 29, 1585. Duke Julius of Braunschweig and Lüneburg (1528–1589) was informed about mining in his dominion. The "Osterwaldische Kollen Berckwerck" was also mentioned. Thereupon 1587 miners from Clausthal in the Harz mountains were brought to Osterwald to optimize the mining. They founded Osterwald, and the Osterwald Hüttenstollen developed through hard coal mining .

The coal mined was mainly used to operate glassworks , such as the plant for Lauensteiner as white hollow glass, founded in Osterwald by Oberamtmann Conrad Werner Wedemeyer in 1701 . She made high-quality crystal glass right from the start . Other glassworks were built in the area, such as the one founded on the Heide in 1774. The glassworks at Hemmendorfer Dreisch was founded in the Heide district in 1775 and produced window glass and green hollow glass for a few months . It was converted into a brick factory in 1784 .

The school house in Osterwald was built in 1790. The celebration of the mountain festival was first mentioned in a document in 1819. It has probably been celebrated for a long time. For the director of the coal mine , a mansion, which later became the “Kurhaus”, was built in 1828. In 1831 a cholera epidemic broke out in Osterwald . The schoolhouse was expanded in 1849. The Reusseschen Glashütte in Oldendorf / Glashütte was founded in 1852. There white and green hollow glass was produced.

On September 2, 1872, a memorial was inaugurated in memory of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. In the same year a post office was set up in the village. In 1875, Osterwald was connected to the Elze – Löhne railway operated by the Hanover-Altenbeken Railway Company . A sugar factory was built next to the train station. Forest was cleared around the place in 1885 to create arable land. The old "Lauensteiner" glassworks was shut down in 1886. In 1892, however, a new glass factory with no economic connection to the old glassworks was built on the same site.

Christ Church in Osterwald

One year after the foundation stone was laid, the Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church was consecrated in 1897. Mining and the glassworks went into the possession of the Aktiengesellschaft für Glasindustrie vorm. Friedrich Siemens in Dresden.

1900-1950

The school was rebuilt again in 1909 and a water pipe was added in 1911. The parish built a rectory in 1911. Osterwald received electric light in 1914. The sugar factory ceased operations in 1920. The 1914/18 war memorial was laid out in 1921.

The Siemens'sche Glashütte was sold for demolition in 1931. In the same year an organ was installed in the church. In 1938, the Osterwald community received the right to obtain drinking water from the Gustav tunnel. On December 24th of the same year the church was badly damaged by fire. From 1945 to 1953 the mining of hard coal was operated as emergency mining to supply the rural population. The tunnel was then prepared as a water extraction system. This use was also given up again in 1960.
